When you're going through hell...

...Keep on going - you might get out before the devil even knows you're there.

A great line from a country song - and so where we are right now. The past few days have been a total rollercoaster ride - here's the short version:

Jay Michael Foster was born 2:30 a.m. (early!!) Friday morning on March 7, 2008
10 lbs 4 oz (yeah, a big fella like his daddy!) 22 and 1/2 inches

He spent most of the day with us in the room and seemed to be fine, but later Friday evening he began breathing very rapidly and was taken to the special care nursery. After some follow-up, the docs discovered a heart defect (aortic coarctation, which is a narrow spot in the aorta) on Saturday and was taken to Duke University Medical Center's pediatric ICU. He will have to have surgery to remove that narrowed section of the aorta. Originally, that was planned for Monday, 3/10, but it has been moved back until Tuesday or possibly Wednesday. He is stable at this point and will stay in the ICU until surgery. We are working on getting more detailed information out to everyone and will either post that here or let everyone know where to find it.

Please understand that while we want to tell each of you what is going on in a more personal way, we're spending all the time we can with Jay. We'll try to return phone calls and emails when we can, but until then you can check back here for more details in the coming days.

Your thoughts and prayers are much appreciated both for Jay and us.

Jen & Derek,
congratulations on the birth of your son!
I hope for his speedy recovery, any my whole family will be praying for him. I know you have lots of support from family and friends, but on the off chance that we can be of any help, please let me know.
And I'm not sure if I can switch to Jay now - I'm pretty attached to Torquil!

Jen,

You're someone's MOM! Does that rock or what? Congratulations on the birth of your beautiful baby boy. What a perfectly shaped little thing he is. I am sending positive energy and prayers your way for the surgery and recovery process.
